Surfaces in your kitchen can be protected from serving ware and cookware that is hot when you purchase your own cast iron trivet. They are attractive and long lasting and you can find them in many shapes and styles. Of course, sometimes drinks or food may end up getting spilled on your trivet, which means you’ll need to clean it. Occasionally a bit of rust may show up as well, which will need to be removed. Here are a few tips to help you carefully and effectively clean your trivets made of cast iron.
For general cleaning, simply put the cast iron trivet in the sink and add some very mild dish detergent. To work on the intricate designs that are often on these trivets, use a toothbrush or a soft fingernail brush to scrub all parts of the trivet. Make sure you get all the small spots where food can hide. Once you are done washing the trivet, use a towel to dry it and then allow it to air dry for awhile too.
If you are dealing with rust on the cast iron trivet, you’ll need to follow some different steps. Fill up a sink with one gallon of white vinegar and one gallon of tap water. Take the trivets that are rusty and put them in the sink. You’ll want to allow them to soak for about an hour or so. Then use a cloth to rub the rusted area. The rust should easily come off. If not, allow them to sit for another hour. Rinse the solution of vinegar and water away and then scrub with a soft toothbrush or fingernail brush. Then rinse the trivets in a water and baking soda solution to help neutralize the vinegar. Wash with warm water and a mild soap and then dry.
